As Christian parents, we have a beautiful responsibility and privilege: to introduce our children to the God who loves them. But how do we do this in a way that is meaningful, age-appropriate, and not forced?
"Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."
— Proverbs 22:6
Ages 0-3: Plant Seeds of Love
At this age, children learn about God primarily through your love and care. They cannot understand theology, but they can feel safety, warmth, and joy.
- Sing simple worship songs and lullabies
- Read board books like God Made You Special
- Pray simple prayers at bedtime: "Thank you God for Mommy, Daddy, and our family"
- Let them see you praying and reading your Bible
Ages 4-7: Tell the Stories
Children at this age love stories, and the Bible is full of amazing ones. This is the golden age for building biblical literacy.
- Read The Jesus Storybook Bible — every story whispers His name
- Use The Beginner's Bible for colorful, engaging retellings
- Act out Bible stories together
- Start memorizing simple verses: John 3:16, Psalm 23:1, Philippians 4:13
- Pray together before meals and at bedtime
Ages 8-12: Go Deeper
Pre-teens are ready for deeper conversations about faith, doubt, and what they believe.
- Give them The Action Bible — a comic-book style Bible they will actually want to read
- Try Indescribable by Louie Giglio — 100 devotions connecting God and science
- Encourage questions — do not be afraid of hard questions about faith
- Start a family devotional time
- Get them involved in church youth activities
Ages 13+: Walk Alongside
Teenagers need to own their faith, not just borrow yours. Your role shifts from teacher to guide.
- Recommend Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harris
- Have honest conversations about real-world issues through a biblical lens
- Respect their questions and doubts — they are part of growing up
- Model authentic faith — they are watching how you handle struggles
- Pray for them consistently, even when they seem distant
The Most Important Thing
More than any book or program, your children will learn about God by watching you. Let them see you pray. Let them see you forgive. Let them see you turn to God in hard times. Your authentic faith is the most powerful teaching tool you have.
